Ann and Alastair are justly proud of their charming inn which is situated
in the lovely Cumbrian village of Dean. Just on the fringe of the Lake District, with
Loweswater, Crummock and Buttermere a short distance away. Dean is located 6ne and a half
miles off the A5036 and The Royal Yew Inn is situated on the main road through the
village. From the Lillyhall roundabout on the A595 it is a five minute drive to Dean. At
the cross roads just past the 14th. century St. Oswald's church, turn right and follow
through village to the Royal Yew.
The deeds of The Royal
Yew date back to 1373. However it is interesting to note that above the serving area of
the bar there is a beam inscribed with the date of 1231 and the words ";Royal
Yew";. Although there may well be a little craftsman's licence with respect to the
date, the building does in fact have links with the 13th. century.
The gnarled and ancient yew tree on the forecourt of the inn is believed
to be older than the building which is now The Royal Yew Inn. It has not been possible to
date the tree but it is thought that it could be aged between 800 and a 1000 years old. |
